Geolocation FAQs

Geolocation data is extremely helpful when it comes to understanding your audience and how they’re interacting with your brand. That’s why for Growth and Enterprise plans, within your Flowcode portal, you can view a live and interactive geographic map that gathers location information from your scans, right down to the Zip Code level.

Some of the more technical aspects of Geolocation, however, can get confusing. So, let’s answer some FAQs:

How is geolocation calculated?

Geolocation leverages the IP address of a person’s device and matches it against a series of public location databases to hone in on where the user might be located. Geo data is based on the last best connection to wifi or a cell tower (which can lag up to 14 days).

The Advanced Geolocation Data Interstitial is a location access prompt that a consumer will be served after scanning a code or visiting a Flowpage for the first time, allowing you to see first-party location data.

Consumers will only be served the interstitial if you have enabled it for a Flowcode or Flowpage. See a step-by-step guide on how to set it up here.

Using the interstitial, you get GPS enabled geo data (which is 90%+ accurate).

I see scans in a state my code was not in, how does that happen?

The tricky thing is that as mobile devices move with the people who’s pockets they are in, their IP address is updated, making it more difficult to pinpoint where they are.

Location can be further muddied by factors like the usage of a VPN or rerouted by a server, or proxy. In these cases, the geolocation data will report as that location, sometimes in a neighboring state or further.

Additionally, where your code is placed (OOH, CTV, etc.) can make a difference by adding additional IP addresses through connected devices or wifi routers that can help verify a scanner’s location.

Is the time selected inclusive or exclusive of the start and end dates?

In your dashboard, when you slice data the time range you select will be inclusive of the start and end dates. For example, if you were to pull scan location data from Tuesday the 7th of November 2023 to Friday the 10th, both Friday and Tuesday would be included in the data you see.

Can I collect Geo Data outside the United States?

Flowcode Geolocation data and reporting is live across the United States and in a limited capacity in Canada. In Canada, we can provide province/town data, but not map-level data.

Is the International Geo Data collected accurate?

Canadian data, while limited to the province/town level, is reported by the same process and to a similar degree of accuracy as U.S. data.

What Time Zone is scan data in?

All Flowcode and Flowpage data is in your local time zone (the one your computer is in)

Why am I not seeing scans by region instead of scans by state?

The Geo map displays scan data at various levels: country, region, state, Zip Code, and street/neighborhood level (if device-enabled location is available). To view scans at different levels, use the zoom in and out buttons located in the upper right corner of the map. Adjust the zoom level to see the desired geographical breakdown.

Refer to the screenshots below for visual guidance on these different views.
